Texas Gets Two New Council Representatives

Two long-time Texas union carpenters are the newest Council Representatives for the Central South Carpenters. Shawn Walker now represents Local 429, covering the North Texas area. Francisco Marquez now represents Local 1266, covering the Central Texas area.

Shawn comes from a large family of union tradesmen, teachers and nurses. He grew up building houses and framing. As a union carpenter he specialized in scaffold, interior systems, and concrete. For the past two years, he’s also been a full-time carpenter training instructor for the Arlington training center, specializing in industrial scaffolding and floor covering. Shawn is an active member of the Union, holding positions such as delegate, financial secretary and council vice-president during his time at the UBC.

“My job is to provide the Local 429 membership with every possible opportunity to be employed. The biggest key will be building relationships between us and our customers, our employers and the general community,” Walker said. “We have one of the largest markets in the country here in Texas and the UBC has a goal of 70% marketshare. If we want to meet that goal and raise the living standards for all carpenters, we must do our part here. Future generations of carpenters and tradespeople lives and wages are counting on us to do our part like our fore fathers did for us.”Francisco Marquez

Francisco is a specialist in interior systems, and has worked on many high-profile projects in the Texas. He also is a leader among the membership, having completed two of the highest UBC proprietary leadership training programs:  (1) UBC Journeymen: Building Leadership for a Strong Future, which develops leadership, mentoring, coaching, and communication skills, how to engage with newer members and lead by example, all while promoting positive work environments and productivity on the job; and (2) 212 Journeymen: Next Level UBC Leaders, the newest leadership program to expand the total UBC professional for those who have cultivated their personal leadership style and are ready for the next step in their career path.

“I am committed to making the union stronger in central Texas,” Marquez said. “We have all of the tools to provide a great quality of life for those men and women who want to create a career as a union carpenter. My priority is to find work for our membership, and to find more men and women and teach them about the benefits of joining the Central South Carpenters.
