Every year, the Department of Labor hosts a Labor Rights Week to increase awareness and inform workers and employers about their rights and responsibilities under U.S. labor laws. The DOL partners with foreign embassies, their consulates and DOL field offices at events in the community to get the message into the hands of the local workforce.
The Central South Carpenters were happy to participate, and hosted a great event for close to 100 people in at the Local 1266 Union Hall in Austin. Central South staff welcomed officials from OSHA, the Mexican Consulate, Equal Justice Center, Secure Your Health, and Refugee Services of Austin. Dozens of local carpenters and their families also attended.
The program included presentations on payroll fraud, worker safety, workers rights, and work opportunities with the carpenters. The group also experienced Central South Carpenter hospitality by way of DJ’d music, a taco dinner, a mechanical bull and a tool raffle.
